The institute in its executive meeting held recently had agreed to take the campaign for entrenchment of operational research practices to governments at all levels and organised private sectors.
The president in his opening remark reiterated the vision, mission and agenda of the institute for the Nation and the Economy. He said the Institute vision is to bridge the gap between interdisciplinary research and its applications to the industries and also committed to providing scientific solutions to diverse interdisciplinary complex problems.
According to him the Nation is in dire need of Operational research solutions in every aspect of her life. He said the need for efficiency, reduction in cost of operations and increase in profitability and productivity can adequately be met by applying suitable operational research tools and techniques. Provision of these solutions he affirmed are the occupation of the institute but the decision makers must demonstrate willpower to implement them by placing more emphasis on scientific solutions to problem rather than heuristic or rule of thumb practices that usually results in waste and non-optimization of resources, and monumental corruption the nation has witnessed over the years.
The training he said will commence in earnest, given the economy situation of the country and the outlook of things in the years ahead. Training the decision makers to optimize resources and budgets cannot be delayed further. He said operational research must be taken seriously if Nigeria and corporations will make judicious use of their available resources to achieve much needed development and eradication of poverty in the land.
In his word, he strongly advice the governments and organised private sectors to see decision problems’ requirements to be: identification of problems; data gathering and analysis, parametric and sensitivity analysis, implementation of solutions and control mechanism to guarantee sustainable system that works rather than “cut and paste” mindset. Abraham Maslow says: “If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail”, all problems are different in structure as well as how to solve them. Operational research is the only interdisciplinary science that proffers solutions to all types of complex decision problem to achieve desirable level of efficiency and productivity, most especially now that Nigeria is transiting from mono product economy i.e. oil-based economy to a multi-products economy powered by agriculture. He said the government can benefit from rich and applied specific research works of its members who are renowned academicians, researchers and experts in various fields.
Dr Asaolu, a renowned academician, HOD Systems Engineering department, University of Lagos who is the first VP of the Institute, is of the opinion that there is no better time than now for the country to benefit from the wealth of knowledge of its members and various research projects that cut across industries and sectors of the economy that have been carried out by members of the institute. He challenges the governments at all levels to explore the operational research methodologies in achieving full potentials of their budget and optimized resources allocation.
The executives of IORMS all agreed that the need for Operational Research cannot be overemphasized given its wider application in all areas of the society. They also restate their commitment to training and development of Operational research analysts to meet the challenges of this time.
Finally, the registrar of the Institute Mr. Okesola urged the organised private sectors, government agencies, SME operators, administrators and those who are saddled with management of resources to achieve stated goals to join the Institute. He said the Institute is well positioned and ready to imbibe the culture of Operational Research in decision making and analysis across all the sectors of Nigerian economy through the Institute’ Operational Research/Management Science Leadership Coaching . He said the assumptions that OR is mathematics and mainly for engineering is erroneous. According to him, OR is multi-disciplinary and not necessarily mathematics 100 percent, there is both soft and hard OR/MS. It involves psychology, sociology, economics, marketing, health management, and information technology and so on.
